MSIG Assisting Penang Flood Victims

Claims Expedited – RM2.2 Million Paid Out Already

KUALA LUMPUR, 5 December 2017 –  Following the recent Penang floods, MSIG Insurance (Malaysia) Bhd (“MSIG Malaysia”) has been doing its part to help Penangites to recuperate in the aftermath by settling claims amounting to RM2.2 million to date. In addition to speeding up its claims pay-out process to facilitate the recovery process, MSIG has also made several charitable donations to organisations assisting in Penang. This included a corporate donation of RM50,000 to the Food Aid Foundation and, a donation of RM37,000 to Persatuan Insurans Am Malaysia (PIAM) from MSIG staff fundraising efforts. MSIG staff have also been on the ground providing practical help and assistance in the aftermath of the floods.

“These floods were extremely devastating to the people impacted and as such everyone needs to provide these victims with as much assistance as possible to set them on the road to recovery. For our part we have expedited claims to help Penangites to rebuild their lives and businesses as quickly as they can,” said Mr Chua Seck Guan, MSIG Malaysia Chief Executive Officer.

MSIG has estimated that over 10,000 of its policy holders live in the areas most affected by the floods and it has been doing what it can to make things easier for them. This has included setting up dedicated claims line for policyholders, reaching out to them via SMS and reminders and advice on the MSIG Corporate Website and Facebook Page. Policyholders were also reminded of availability of convenient claims submission via MSIG Home Assist App. To speed up the turnaround time, MSIG also expedited fast track payments for claims below RM30,000 and responded to the claims within 7 days from the date of loss.

As a result of these efforts, MSIG has received over 500 reported claims with 50% of home policyholders having already received some payments from MSIG. In total MSIG has already paid RM2.2 million of claims, including interim payments to business owners.

In the immediate aftermath of the floods, MSIG also made a RM50,000 donation to the Food Aid Foundation to assist with buying food items and necessary supplies to ease the burden of flood victims, while a number of MSIG staff also volunteered to work with Food Aid Foundation to help clean affected homes.

MSIG staff were also supportive in donating to Persatuan Insurans Am Malaysia (PIAM), who had partnered with Malaysia International Search & Rescue (MISAR) in its effort to conduct evacuation and assistance for victims. To enhance their staff’s fund-raising efforts, MSIG Malaysia agreed to donate an additional RM1 for every RM1 pledged by MSIG staff.

“No amount of assistance can fully replace the loss, shock and trauma suffered by flood victims, but hopefully our assistance will go some way to easing the burden on these people and help them get back on their feet more quickly. MSIG wants to do its bit to help Penangites rebuild their lives and their businesses, and as such we would like to encourage all policyholders affected by the flood to contact us for our assistance with their claims,” Mr Chua Seck Guan added.
