Biodiversity
Safeguarding Nature's biodiversity for a more sustainable future.
At MSIG, we're also about safeguarding the future of our planet.

Biodiversity is the incredible variety of living organisms and natural ecosystems that sustain life on Earth. It plays a crucial role in providing essential resources such as food, water and medicine. Unfortunately, this rich diversity is increasingly at risk.
As an insurance company that places value on every aspect of life, we recognize the urgent need to protect biodiversity. Not just for the health of our planet. But the well-being of future generations.

Understanding biodiversity
Life on Earth includes millions of species of plants, animals, insects and microorganisms. These species live in diverse ecosystems, from rivers and rainforests to deserts and oceans. This variety of life and its habitats is called biodiversity. A combination of "bio" (life) and "diversity" (variety).
Why biodiversity is key to a sustainable future
Our world is like a web, with each strand representing a species in an ecosystem, all interconnected. Forests house animals, animals consume plants and insects like bees pollinate them. Plants rely on healthy soil, fertilized by fungi breaking down organic matter. Every species, big or small, plays a role in sustaining a planet of over 7 billion people. When one strand breaks, the web weakens.
Biodiversity is essential for thriving communities and the health of our planet. It supports Earth's life systems, providing us with food, clean water, medicines and more. All of which in turn, drive economic activity. (Essentials we often fail to appreciate and even take for granted.)
What’s putting biodiversity at risk?
In just under four decades, populations of mammals, birds, fish, reptiles, insects, plants and amphibians have on average declined by 60%, with the trend continuing. The primary driver of this alarming loss of biodiversity is human activity. These include deforestation, greenhouse gas emissions and the pollution of oceans and rivers with plastic and chemicals.
Unsustainable consumption and development have also destroyed vital habitats. Contributing to global warming and worsening natural disasters. While humans have played a significant role in this crisis, we also have the power to make a positive change.

Biodiversity protection is at the core of our sustainability mission
At MSIG, our mission is to support the development of a thriving society and secure a sustainable future by delivering safety and peace of mind through our global insurance and financial services.
In the face of growing challenges such as large-scale disasters, climate change, resource depletion, aging populations, rising healthcare costs and social inequalities; we are integrating the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals into our business objectives.
Our goal: to create solutions that enhance resilience and drive sustainability for communities.
Some of our key sustainability priorities include
SDG 3: Good Health and Well Being (Road Safety)
We collaborated with local philanthropist Encik Sujana Rejab who creates 3D printed prosthetics for those who are in need. The first corporate sponsors to help his work, MSIG used this opportunity to draw attention to the continued need to practice road safety.
SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities
After sending a team to build a home for a family in three days, we have started to offer a dedicated fire insurance product for social enterprises, starting with Epic Homes, to insure, protect, and contribute to the longevity of their projects for the underserved.
The importance of aligning our corporate activities with the interests of the world is key to ensuring sustainable societies and our very existence.
As we continue with our sustainability journey in the region- with a focus on biodiversity- we are helping to ensure that we have a thriving society and a planet for the future generation.

We are supporting
Biodiversity through
Mangrove Reforestation
(SDG 13- Climate Action)

Being the 2nd largest general insurer in Malaysia with market leadership in the following classes (No. 1 in Marine Cargo, No. 2 in Fire & No. 4 in Motor), it is vital that we choose a biodiversity initiative that will assist and mitigate environmental issues and create shared value in the communities it affects.
- Polluted Rivers causes Malaysia to lose its mangrove forest rapidly- 1% a year since 1990.
- Floods are the most devastating natural disaster in Malaysia, often causing loss & damage to homes and vehicles.
With these environment issues, MSIG Malaysia will be supporting the Biodiversity initiative through Mangrove Reforestation, in support of SDG 13- Climate Action.
To date we have planted 150 Mangrove Seedlings in the Cherating River area north of Kuantan, with similar mangrove planting sessions planned across Malaysia for the year 2020 and beyond.
MSIG is making a real impact on sustainability in Asia
Sustainability is a continuous journey, and this is just the beginning.
