MSIG Expedites Interim Payments to Policyholders Affected by Flood

09 Jan 2015 Press Releases

Encourage more policyholders to come forward for assistance

Kuala Lumpur, 9 January 2015 –  Mr Robert is a watch dealer from Temerloh, Pahang.  During the heavy downpour, while he was home, he heard that water was rising to a critical stage.  This being his first experience facing such situation, he returned to his shop, hoping to move his merchandise to a higher floor to save them from flood.  He never thought that the move would have him stuck in the shop for one and a half days as the water rose much faster than he expected.  He survived on instant noodles until he was rescued.

In the aftermath of the flood disaster that hit several states in Malaysia especially Kelantan, MSIG Insurance (Malaysia) Bhd (MSIG Malaysia) is taking a proactive approach in ensuring that policyholders in affected areas are given priority in their claims.   MSIG Malaysia is one of the leading general insurers in Fire, Engineering and Personal Accident classes and No.1 in Marine Cargo insurance.

“In this time of need, everyone needs to rally and provide as much assistance as we can to help the flood victims.  These victims have a long road to recovery ahead of them.  From rebuilding their homes and businesses to ensuring their health and well-being is taken care of.  I am pleased to see Malaysians have come together to offer as much as possible.  On our part, it is our responsibility to go above and beyond to ensure that our policyholders have a smooth and expedited claims to allow them to rebuild their lives and businesses as soon as they can.  On top of that, the company has decided to channel contributions of 430 school supplies to the affected schools via MSIG’s on-going CSR campaign “Dream Kits for 2015 Kids” said Mr Chua Seck Guan, MSIG Malaysia Chief Executive Officer.

Mr Robert was issued an interim claim of RM5,000 within days of his submission.  He is grateful for the speed it was processed as it enables him to start the repairing work for his shop to resume business.  Two more business owners, Mr Low and Mr Yeo from Maran, who were unable to save their businesses and properties also received the interim payment or RM10,000 and RM4,000 respectively.

The proactive measure undertaken by MSIG is also part of General Insurance Association of Malaysia (PIAM) and Malaysian Takaful Association (MTA) effort to address the needs of flood victims.

“There are approximately 4,000 policyholders, both individuals and commercial in the East Coast and to date we have received 236 claims – out of which, 33 has been disbursed.  We would like to encourage policyholders affected by the flood to contact us for our assistance with their claims,” he further added.

Policyholder Mr Low said, “I have been paying for insurance for over 10 years and never expected a flood of this magnitude to happen to me and when it did, I am so glad that I took the time to invest in it.  It cannot replace what I have lost but it gives me a better peace of mind.”
